How to burn loose incense using the charcoal disc method
Select a bowl that will safely hold burning charcoal. Line the bowl with ash, rice or sand. Use tongs or a stretched out pair of tweezers to hold the charcoal disc, and then light it using a lighter, match or candle flame. Wait for the orange sparks to move across the charcoal, then gently place the burning charcoal on ash or rice or sand in your bowl. Add a small amount of loose incense on top of the burning charcoal disc. As the incense turns to ash, use your tongs to gently brush the burnt incense off the charcoal into the bowl, without breaking the charcoal. Breaking the charcoal will lessen its burn time. Continue to add incense and then brush it off as the incense burns and turns to ash. Charcoal generally burns for several hours.

How to burn loose incense using the burning bowl method
Select a container that will safely hold burning incense. A few examples of safe containers include sea shells, metal or wooden bowls, and cast iron pans or cauldrons. Place the loose incense in the container. Light an area of the incense using a lighter or match. Gently, slowly and cautiously blow on the lit area to keep it ignited. As you blow the embers will spread, burning the incense. Always blow very gently to ensure that the embers do not leave the bowl. When walking while using the burning bowl method remain aware of your surroundings so that you do not trip, bump into something or move close to fans that may force burning embers out of the container. The Burning Bowl Method is favored by those who wish to enter a meditative state.

How to burn smudge wands
Select a plate or bowl or shell to hold under the burning wand. Light your wand and gently blow on the lit tip. If it does not heavily smoke try lighting it using a candle flame instead of a lighter. Hold the wand over your safe plate or bowl or shell while smudging, to prevent burning embers from falling. Moving the wand will encourage further burning. Allow the wand's smoke to fill any area you wish to spiritually cleanse and bless. If you would like it to burn all at once during yoga or meditation, simply do not put it out. If you only need to smudge rooms, people, pets or objects to banish negativity and to bless, use the wand as needed. To put it out push the burning tip into a safe plate or bowl or shell until it stops smoking.
